Giving something good back
It’s already been 2,5 months living here in Cuenca and I can’t imagine how many things I have experienced during this time. Besides visiting many places and trying out every traditional dish possible, I have constantly been part of the non-profit- organization FUPEC I’m volunteering in. I guess every expat can understand how difficult it is balancing a full time job, while wanting to explore the whole country you just moved in.
Fortunately I don’t have that problem!
With FUPEC I had the great honor to travel to different cities while doing meaningful activities that support cancer and catastrophic illnesses patients. Doing charity work and getting to know another culture is possible.
Side by side we are working with patients and the government to improve the current healthcare system in Ecuador. You bet it’s complicated and I tell you it is! But what is not in life? For 12 years FUPEC and their volunteers have been loyal to help those in need.
Like some weekends ago, we gave away kits with toys and sanitary products to kids with leukemia and hemophilia. It was a wonderful experience, although a sad one at the same time too. Nevertheless bringing a smile to their face is also part of our emotional work.
Why wait until you are the one who needs help?, start helping before you need assistance yourself. This is what I thought when starting this whole journey and I’m so happy to have made this decision.
