Sometimes, in the course of traveling, we find ourselves in foreign cities for a regrettably short time, whether because of layovers or delays or for a myriad of other reasons. Or perhaps you only have two weeks of vacation and want to see as much of as many countries as you can. Just because you have such a short amount of time doesn’t mean you shouldn’t attempt to make the most of it and get to know this new, strange city as well as you can. Obviously, this is not the optimal mode for travel, but sometimes it can’t be helped. I myself am the kind of traveler who much prefers visiting fewer places for longer periods of time (one of my ideas of getting to know a city is sitting at a sidewalk café for hours on end), but I too have found myself in a strange city awaiting a departing flight or bus or just on the way from here to there. Here are my tips on how to best get to know a city in such a limited time:

1. If You Have Time To Plan Ahead, Choose A Hotel Or Hostel Near To The Places You’re Most Interested In Seeing.

2. Talk To And/Or Make Friends With The Staff At Your Hostel And With Other Travelers.

3. Take A Moment To Consider Your Interests

4. Plan!

5. Do Go To The Main Market.

6. Find Out What Some Of The Typical Dishes Are In The City You’re In.

7. Walk!

8. Bypass The Big Tourist Attractions Unless You’re Really, Really Interested In Them. They Tend To Cost A Lot Of Money And, In My Experience, Are Rarely Worth It.

9. Accept The Fact That You Won't Be Able To See Everything.
