Forums › Expat Q&A › Is it feasible to bring a bike to Ecuador?
I’m trying to calculate the feasibility of bringing a bike to Ecuador. I would buy a bike in a shop in the U.S. and treat the box as luggage all the way to Cuenca.
Has anyone done this recently? If so, what were customs duties? What did the airline charge?
From my reading, bicycles used to be duty free (I think sporting goods are duty free) but that has changed and now they are categorized as “vehicles” and are subject to import tax.
My guess is 25-40% for customs duties, and fees vary by airline, but free is possible and something like $75-$150 is likely.
Thanks for any info, and I hope this helps others as well!
