This Friday at 20:00 in the Church of San Roque (Av. Loja and Calle de El Farol), the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and the Symphony Orchestra of Cuenca, under the direction of maestro Yuri Sobolev, as guest conductor, offer a great concert, free of charge.
Claro de Luna orchestrated by André Caplet, Claude Debussy’s Little Suite, Maurice Ravel’s Pavane for a Deceased Infanta and Couperin’s Tomb and Ottorino Respighi’s Botticellian Triptych make up the repertoire of this concert.
Sobolev was born in Moscow in 1973. He graduated with honors in Orchestral and Opera Conducting in 1999 under the tutelage of Professor Leonid Nikolaev and conducted the Moscow Conservatory Symphony Orchestra until 2008.
He graduated in music theory and trombone at the Gnesin Academy; he then continued his studies in composition and conducting at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. He attended classes with Aleksander Vedernikov, Yuri Holopov, Alexander Sokolov. As a guest conductor he has conducted important orchestras around the world such as the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the Anatolian University Symphony Orchestra (Eskishehir, Turkey), the National Radio and Television Orchestra of Albania, the Far East Symphony Orchestra (Khabarovsk), the Smolensk Chamber Orchestra, the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
In 2007 he received the diploma of the Government of Ryazan Province “for his achievements in the field of musical performance”. He was the conductor of the Symphony and Chamber Orchestra at the Prokofiev Moscow Provincial Music School (2008/11) in the city of Pushkin. In 2009, he was a laureate of the fourth Moscow Provincial Orchestral Music Competition in the city of Elektrostal, and in the same year he was at the helm of the Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra. In the 2011/12 season he was artistic and principal conductor of the Smolensk Chamber Orchestra.
Yuri Sobolev is also the author of a thorough study “Axioms and Theorems in Accompanying Orchestra Conducting”, published in the book “Intercultural Communication”, No. 3, Moscow, 2011.
Since 2019, he has been assistant conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador.
