The ancient cultures that inhabited the equator developed various sound objects related to astronomical and geodetic knowledge of the territory. In this salon, archaeomusicologist Esteban Valdivia will discuss the sounds of ancient Ecuadorian cultures and how their instruments represent the wisdom of the time. The ancient ceramicists’ task was to reflect the knowledge of the stars on the earth plane and they did this by engraving a series of symbols into the clay which related the sounds to the stars. In this salon, you will not only learn about the sounds these instruments make but also about their astronomical importance in the region. This salon will be a transformative experience to help us better understand the place many of us call home today.
