For the first time in over 6 years, GYEflamenca is returning to Cuenca and they will perform two exclusive shows while they are here…both at idiomART! There will also be a very special pre-show cultural salon and the group will explain the history of flamenco, the signals and cues shared between the musicians and dancers to guide the dance, the styles that exist, the style they will be performing (“tablao”), and how it’s expressed in Andalucia…the essence of flamenco.

GYEFlamenca is an artistic and cultural initiative that began in 2021 to promote the historical art of Flamenco. They promote cultural exchanges by organizing performances with artists from the Flamenco scene in Spain who travel to Ecuador to share their culture, their passion for Flamenco.
The Tablao is the most characteristic style of Flamenco and is known for its energy, strength, and passion. In this performance, we will delight your senses with singing, guitar, and dance with a national and international ensemble. This will be a captivating night infused with culture, energy, and beauty.
The world-class ensemble has years of training and has been performing Flamenco in different parts of Europe and Ecuador.
Invited performers from Spain:
Santiago Cardenas is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and began learning Flamenco in Spain in 2009. He has since returned several times to continue his immersive training and has belonged to ensembles of different musical genres. He is one of the co-founders of GyeFlamenca, based in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He is a professor at the University of the Arts and musical director of this performance.
At the age of 4, Renata Ruiz began her dance studies in Guadalajara, Mexico.
In 2017, she obtained a scholarship in Carmen de las Cuevas, Granada and in 2019 she attended the Granada Dance Conservatory. She currently lives in Seville, Spain, where she actively dances and teaches classes. She has performed in Spain, France, Mexico and Ecuador.
Founders of GyeFlamenca and performers:
Camila Valdiviezo began her studies in Flamenco in Ecuador in 2012. She then traveled to Granada, Spain to study for a year at the Carmen de las Cuevas school in the legendary Sacromonte barrio between 2016 and 2017. In 2019, she took a professionalization course at the same school where she was given the opportunity to dance in one of the most recognized tablaos in Granada, La Alboreá. Returning to Ecuador in 2021, she created the cultural and artistic initiative GyeFlamenca, which promotes the art of Flamenco in the city of Guayaquil and organizes exchanges with artists from the Flamenco scene in Spain.
Alexis “El Menderí” is a French singer based in Spain and he began his flamenco studies in Strasbourg in 2012, accompanying renowned artists who toured his country. In 2017 he decided to move to the cradle of Flamenco in Spain. He is a singing teacher and has toured in Spain, Italy, France, and Ecuador.
